Members of notorious forgery ring arrested in Spain and Thailand Indie Pro Pub: "Thai authorities said, Thursday, suspects arrested in Spain and Thailand recently in connection with an international forgery ring may have prepared the fake documents to the perpetrators of the 2004 Madrid bombings.
Seven people were arrested in Spain and three in Thailand this week. Jaime Fa, a police attaché at the Spanish Embassy in Bangkok said this could signify a major achievement in dismantling one of the world’s most notorious forgery rings.
He said the gang is known for its skill in providing fake documents to criminal and terror enterprises.
Thai Police Col. Naratch Sawetanant of the Department of Special Investigation said Spanish police have evidence that some of the suspects arrested this week provided fake identification to the Muslim militants blamed in the bombing on Madrid’s commuter trains. The blast killed 191 people, wounded more than 1,800 others, during rush hour on March 11, 2004.
Muhammad Athar Butt, 39, Zeeshan Ehsan Butt, 27, of Pakistan, and Sirikanya Kitbamrung, 25, of Thailand were arrested November 30 when they were trying to enter Laos. Naratch said they are facing possible charges of allegedly receiving stolen passports from networks in Spain and Europe via regular mail and then altering the passports for their clients."
