A Thai court has sentenced a Spanish woman to life imprisonment for drug smuggling.
Police arrested 52-year-old Maria Nieves Garcia Alcaraz at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport on August 3, 2009, after finding 6.38 pounds (2.9 kilograms) of crystal methamphetamine in her luggage. She had arrived on a flight from Ethiopia.
The Criminal Court on Wednesday sentenced Garcia Alcaraz to death, but reduced the punishment to life imprisonment because she had confessed.
Garcia Alcaraz said she received the luggage containing the drugs from a man who brought it from Ghana. She said she was supposed to deliver it to Bali in Indonesia.
