two tons of cannabis have been seized from a drugs network which operated along the Mediterranean coast and was based in Almería province and Águilas, Murcia province. Fifteen members of the gang have been arrested.

The consignments of cannabis were either handed over by their Moroccan suppliers out at sea, or were brought in by van through the port in Almería. One consignment which had been handed over at sea was seized at the port in Águilas, where it had arrived on board a fishing boat which had been under police surveillance.

Another haul of 500 kilos was found in a van which was intercepted in El Ejido after travelling from Morocco to Spain through Almería Port.

The network’s latest delivery in June was thwarted by a Dutch Navy boat which was on patrol against illegal immigration, whose crew surprised a boat taking delivery at sea of a cargo of cannabis. Sixteen of the packages of drugs which were thrown aboard by the suspects were recovered and the boat’s crew were taken into custody.
