BRITISH man whose wife was killed on their honeymoon in South Africa has been accused of plotting her murder by hiring a hitman
Taxi driver Zola Tongo said that Shrien Dewani, offered him £1,300 (15,000 rand) to have 28-year-old Anni killed.
The revelation came as Tongo's trial had been due to start at Cape High Court, where he was jailed for 18 years for his part in Mrs Dewani's murder. He had entered into a "plea bargain" to earn himself a lighter sentence. Tongo, 31, claimed Mr Dewani, 30, asked him to organise for a hitman to have "a woman" killed.
Mr Dewani has repeatedly denied suggestions that he played any part in his wife's death, and his publicist Max Clifford said Tongo's allegation should be "treated with the contempt it deserves".
It followed a court hearing in South Africa, during which taxi driver Zola Tongo said he was offered 15,000 rand (£1,300) by the 30-year-old businessman to kill his wife. The Dewani family dismissed the allegation as 'totally ludicrous'.
Mr Dewani, from Westbury-on-Trym in Bristol, handed himself in at a police station in the city, the Metropolitan Police said. He is due to appear at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court."
