Police swoop on cock-fighting venue in Castellón: "National Police have arrested 15 people after breaking up an illegal cock-fight which was being held in an abandoned farmhouse on the outskirts of the city on Saturday.

Thirty officers were involved in the swoop and rescued 72 birds, two of them badly injured. Videos on a camera found at the scene showed that fights had been taking place at the farmhouse since the morning, and in fact a fight was in progress when police arrived.

The Interior Ministry said in a press release on Tuesday that there were some 80 bird owners and spectators at the venue when police raided and that some had travelled from other parts of Spain. It’s understood that 10 of the spectators were under age.

Officers found drugs on the premises which were used to stimulate the birds and help them to recover more quickly before they fought on to the death. They also found items used in training such as protective covers and leather dolls in the shape of a cockerel."
