Two Czech suspects sought for Picasso and Miró works stolen from Málaga gallery

The National Police have identified two suspects, who are now being sought by Interpol, for the theft from a Málaga gallery a year ago of two works by Pablo Picasso and another by Joan Miró.

The works are two lithographs by the Málaga artist, ‘Portrait de Famille’ and ‘Buho’, and an untitled xylograph by Miró. The three pieces formed part of a private collection and together are worth around 90,000 €.

They were stolen on April 18 2010, just 10 hours after they were hung in a gallery in Málaga city centre. ABC newspaper reports that police suspected from the start that their theft may have been commissioned, as the thieves who broke into the gallery went directly to the hall where the pieces were hanging.

It’s understood that a security system which had been put in place for the exhibition was not yet fully operational on the day of the break-in.

Interpol is now seeking a couple from the Czech Republic who lived in the same building where the gallery is located and are believed to have provided key information for the robbery to the thieves who stole the three missing works.

The suspects are believed to have left Spain to return to their home country.
