A group of 12 animal rights activists who were arrested in four Spanish regions on Wednesday started a hunger strike the following day in protest at the food they are being served in the cells.
Europa Press reports that the suspects are demanding food in accordance with their convictions for their respect towards animals, and want a vegan menu.
The arrests took place in Vizcaya, Madrid, Asturias and Galicia, by order of a court in Santiago de Compostela which is coordinating the investigations. The investigation began after 20,000 mink were set free from a farm in Santiago in November 2007. The EFE news agency reports that the 12 now in custody are allegedly linked with more than a dozen releases of animals in the past three or four years.
There are also alleged public disorder crimes under investigation for incidents in bull rings and at the Cibeles fashion show.
