The investigation began in March, when several restaurants in Torres, Jaen, realized that they had been paid with forged notes and alerted the Guardia Civil.
Although they were unable to say who had given them the notes, the officers noticed several people who were not residents in the town and apparently came from Alicante province, who had always paid with €50 notes when they went into bars and restaurants, and also used them to get change for slot machines.
The same people, three in their twenties, and one aged 62, were later identified in Tijola, Almeria, where they also paid with forged €50 notes. When they were asked, they claimed they did not know where the forged notes had come from and said they must have been tricked, but further investigation revealed that they had made them themselves.
