36 people from Latin America have been victims of scam which brought them to Tenerife to work in hotels. They paid for a fake official master qualification and were told they needed to work ‘in practice’. In fact they were used as cheap labour in hotel complexes on the Canaries. National Police have arrested 13 people for illegal trafficking of foreigners in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The case was triggered when the Spanish National Police were informed by the Interior Council in Bogota in Colombia who noticed a large increase of students registering for study courses on the Canaries. It soon became clear that the courses had no official character, and the study centre lacked the authorisation to give titled classes. Visa applications were also found to be irregular.
